abstract = {The paper presents results from the Collaborative Computational Project in Wave Structure Interaction (CCP-WSI) Blind Test Series 2. Without prior access to the physical data, participants, with numerical methods ranging from low-fidelity linear models to fully non-linear Navier–Stokes (NS) solvers, simulate the interaction between focused wave events and two separate, taut-moored, floating structures: a hemispherical-bottomed cylinder and a cylinder with a moonpool. The ‘blind’ numerical predictions for heave, surge, pitch and mooring load, are compared against physical measurements. Dynamic time warping is used to quantify the predictive capability of participating methods. In general, NS solvers and hybrid methods give more accurate predictions; however, heave amplitude is predicted reasonably well by all methods; and a WEC-Sim implementation, with CFD-informed viscous terms, demonstrates comparable predictive capability to even the stronger NS solvers. Large variations in the solutions are observed (even among similar methods), highlighting a need for standardisation in the numerical modelling of WSI problems.},

abstract = {Wave energy converters (WECs) inherently require appropriate control system technology to ensure maximum energy absorption from ocean waves, consequently reducing the associated levelised cost of energy and facilitating their successful commercialisation. Regardless of the control strategy, the definition of the control problem itself depends upon the specification of a suitable WEC model. Not only is the structure of the model relevant for the definition of the control problem, but also its associated complexity: given that the control law must be computed in real-time, there is a limit to the computational complexity of the WEC model employed in the control design procedure, while there is also a limit to the (analytical) complexity of mathematical models for which a control solution can be efficiently found. This paper presents a systematic nonlinear model reduction by moment-matching framework for WEC systems, capable of providing control-oriented WEC models tailored for the control application, which inherently preserves steady-state response characteristics. Existence and uniqueness of the associated nonlinear moment for WECs are proved in this paper, for a general class of systems. Given that the definition of nonlinear moments depends upon the solution of a nonlinear partial differential equation, an approximation framework for the computation of the nonlinear moment is proposed, tailored for the WEC application. Finally, the use and capabilities of the framework are illustrated by means of case studies, using different WEC systems, under a variety of wave conditions.},

abstract = {Representative models of the nonlinear behavior of floating platforms are essential for their successful design, especially in the emerging field of wave energy conversion where nonlinear dynamics can have substantially detrimental effects on the converter efficiency. The spar buoy, commonly used for deep-water drilling, oil and natural gas extraction and storage, as well as offshore wind and wave energy generation, is known to be prone to experience parametric resonance. In the vast majority of cases, parametric resonance is studied by means of simplified analytical models, considering only two degrees of freedom (DoFs) of archetypical geometries, while neglecting collateral complexity of ancillary systems. On the contrary, this paper implements a representative 7-DoF nonlinear hydrodynamic model of the full complexity of a realistic spar buoy wave energy converter, which is used to verify the likelihood of parametric instability, quantify the severity of the parametrically excited response and evaluate its consequences on power conversion efficiency. It is found that the numerical model agrees with expected conditions for parametric instability from simplified analytical models. The model is then used as a design tool to determine the best ballast configuration, limiting detrimental effects of parametric resonance while maximizing power conversion efficiency.},

abstract = {One of the essential stepping stones for reaching economic viability and industrial feasibility of the wave energy conversion sector is the effectiveness of the device design, which is dependent, among others, on the accuracy of mathematical models used for development. Despite being more than 45 years old, modelling is not mature yet and there is still a clear lack of standardisation of modelling techniques, and a need for increasing confidence in hydrodynamic models. The objective of the Collaborative Computational Project in Wave Structure Interaction is to critically compare and evaluate various different modelling techniques, under the same shared experimental conditions, and using clearly pre-defined metrics. This paper details a contribution implementing, in a computationally efficient way, non-linear Froude–Krylov forces and non-linear kinematics, with the goal to define a medium–high fidelity model, able to compute at a small fraction of the computational time typically required by fully non-linear models. The case study considers survivability-like wave conditions, represented by three steep focused waves, particularly challenging to be modelled using potential theory-based mathematical models. Despite a poor representation in pitch/surge, a good agreement with experimental heave response and mooring load is found, at small computation time, close to real-time computation.},
